Women's Self-Defense Group
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in Tel Aviv
If you have been looking for a women's self-defence class in Tel Aviv, an effective martial art, or somewhere that will make you feel stronger, safer and more capable — you have come to the right place.
Since the academy was founded, one of our central goals has been to make the world of martial arts more accessible to women. On one hand, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is the most effective self-defence system for women. On the other, for years very few women felt comfortable stepping into that world.
We decided to change that.
Today, with hundreds of women who have trained with us over the years, dozens of advanced students and 5 certified female instructors, we are the academy with the largest women's community in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in Israel.
Who teaches the classes?
Classes run under the professional direction and supervision of Professor Itay Leibovich and a team of experienced instructors from within the academy. The programme was built over years of working with women of every age and background, from women who had never trained at all through to advanced students and competitors.
Our emphasis is not only on technique, but on creating a safe, professional, supportive and respectful environment.
Classes are taught in Hebrew, but our instructors speak fluent English and a large part of our members are English speakers. On Saturday nights we run a class taught in English by Philip Paul.
.
What do you learn in class?
Classes combine:
-
Practical self-defense
-
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu
-
Escaping grips and chokes
-
Dealing with a bigger, stronger attacker
-
Working under pressure
-
Building self-confidence
-
Fitness and correct movement
In the early stages you learn the basic principles of movement, distance, getting out of danger and self-control. Later you move into deeper ground work: escapes, control, submission techniques, and handling more complex situations.
The emphasis is always on genuine effectiveness, never on choreography or unrealistic drills.
Beyond the physical side, many of our members report a significant improvement in self-confidence, in their sense of capability, and in their ability to set boundaries off the mat as well.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need fitness or previous experience?
No. The classes suit women who have never trained before.
Is the training aggressive?
No. Classes are adapted to each person's level and run in a safe, controlled way.
Are there women-only classes?
Yes. There is a dedicated women's group alongside the mixed classes.
Is it suitable for women who are not looking to compete?
Absolutely. Most of our members come for confidence, fitness and self-defence.
Is it suitable for self-defence?
Yes, that is exactly the point. The system was developed to let a smaller, weaker person deal with a bigger attacker — built on leverage and technique, not strength.
Are there mixed classes too?
Yes. Alongside the women's group, you can join the mixed classes, in which 25% to 50% of participants are women.
Are classes taught in English?
Classes are taught in Hebrew, but our instructors speak fluent English and a large part of our members are English speakers. On Saturday nights we run a class taught in English by Philip Paul.

Women's self-defense jiu-jitsu do yourself a favor, at any age, and come and train. Especially at this academy, with our wonderful Margarita and the super-professional instructors who give us addictive classes. It is always good to learn something new.

Meirav Menachem, 40
A perfect place to learn self-defense. Extremely professional, a fun atmosphere, a place that feels like home with the best coaching team there is. Very warmly recommended. Simply the best

Stephanie Kazinkov, 30
I started training with Itay at the Academy as someone to whom the whole world of martial arts was completely foreign, and I can only recommend it. The coaches are all very professional, and more than that, you can tell they truly care about the progress of every single student. Overall the Academy has a very supportive, family atmosphere. If someone is reading this now and hesitating, all I can say is that it is worth coming to try!

Margarita Tsofens, 35
For me jiu-jitsu is a source of calm, of quiet, of strength. Something that is always with me, something that goes with me, whether at work or in the street. Something that gives me energy and confidence. Something that is mine.

Hallel Miriam Yosef, 22
I recommend Itay's academy. An experienced coaching team, always a pleasure to come and turn the day into a much better one. Warmly recommended
